Psychiatric Evaluation

A psychiatric evaluation is a comprehensive assessment conducted by a qualified mental health provider to better understand a client’s emotional, behavioral, and mental health concerns.

The provider reviews symptoms, personal and medical history, current medications, and other factors that may affect mental health.

Individuals may seek a psychiatric evaluation appointment for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Experiencing symptoms such as anxiety, depression, mood changes, irritability, difficulty sleeping, or changes in concentration.
  •  Having concerns about emotional or behavioral changes that are affecting daily life
  • Seeking clarification about a possible mental health condition or diagnosis
  • Beginning psychiatric treatment or considering whether medication may be appropriate
  • Checking the effectiveness of a current psychiatric medication
  • Experiencing unwanted or concerning medication side effects
  • Feeling that current symptoms are not adequately controlled
  • Needing a medication dosage adjustment or other treatment-plan change
  • Continuing care after a previous psychiatric evaluation or treatment
  • Coordinating psychiatric care with therapy, primary care, or other healthcare services

What To Expect

Once connecting with our Psychiatric Intake Coordinators, you will complete introductory paperwork, consent forms, and may complete additional assessments. The Psychiatric Intake Coordinator will review our policies, discuss insurance and costs, and will schedule all appointments.

During a psychiatric evaluation, the provider may begin by asking about your current concerns and symptoms. Together, you will review mental health, medical health, and medication history. This may include sleep, appetite, energy, concentration, mood, and daily functioning. The provider may also ask about your personal life, such as family, social, educational, and occupational life. Through this, the provider will be able to develop an initial understanding of your needs. After reviewing all your relevant history, together you will discuss possible diagnoses and treatment options when appropriate. This collaborative process develops recommendations or a treatment plan–assessing safety concerns when clinically appropriate.

  • Better understand their mental health symptoms and concerns
  • Identify appropriate treatment options
  • Establish or clarify a mental health diagnosis when clinically appropriate
  • Make informed decisions about their treatment in collaboration with their provider
  • Track changes in symptoms and overall functioning over time
  • Develop a treatment plan that can be adjusted as the client’s needs change
  • Receive ongoing monitoring and support as part of their mental health care

Psychiatric evaluations provide the opportunity to discuss mental health concerns, receive a comprehensive assessment, and develop or maintain an individualized treatment plan. During these appointments, providers evaluate symptoms, review medications when applicable, monitor progress and side effects, and discuss treatment options. The goal is to support ongoing mental health care and help individuals work collaboratively with their provider toward improved symptom management and daily functioning.
