Addiction

Addiction is a complex condition, brain disorder characterized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli despite adverse consequences. Addiction may contribute to distorted thinking, behavioral and body functions.

When diagnosing addiction, medical professionals will evaluate symptoms that will appear in four categories.

  • Impaired control: a craving or strong urge to use the substance; desire or failed attempts to cut down or control substance use
  • Social problems: substance use causes failure to complete major tasks at work, school or home; social, work or leisure activities are given up or cut back because of substance use
  • Risky use: substance is used in risky settings; continued use despite known problems
  • Drug effects: tolerance (need for larger amounts to get the same effect); withdrawal symptoms (different for each substance)

People with addiction have an intense focus on using a certain substance, such as alcohol or drugs to the point that it can take over their lives. The first step to recovery is recognition of the problem that is addiction. Professional such as ourselves will perform formal assessments to see the severity of the problem. Treatments may include hospitalization, therapeutic communities (highly controlled, drug-free environments) or sober houses, and outpatient programs. For most, a combination of medication and individual or group therapy is most effective.
