Codependency

Codependency is a behavioral condition characterized by a person belonging to a dysfunctional, one-sided relationship. This can be seen in both children and adults and is known as an excessive emotional or psychological reliance on a partner where one person relies on the other for meeting nearly all of their emotional and self-esteem needs. It also describes a relationship that enables another person to maintain their irresponsible, addictive, or underachieving behavior.

When diagnosing Codependency, medical professionals will evaluate a number of symptoms. The following list are some symptoms of codependency. While one does not need to show all to qualify, you might be surprised to see what classifies as a codependent relationship: low self-esteem, people-pleasing, poor boundaries, reactivity, caretaking, control, dysfunctional communication, obsessions, dependency, denial, problems with intimacy, painful emotions.

A therapist can help a person identify codependent tendencies. In therapy, a person can learn to recognize and accept emotions they may have repressed. A therapist can also help them understand why codependent patterns developed in their past and how these patterns have transferred to other relationships. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is commonly used to treat and change codependent patterns of thought and beliefs. This treatment aims to teach the codependent person how to recognize his or her own problems and separate them from those of the additional person.
